What is Congenital Nystagmus?

Congenital Nystagmus (CN) is a condition a child is born with in which the eyes make repetitive eye movements.
These uncontrolled movements may be seen in different patterns. The movements are usually seen in a horizontal pattern but might appear in other patterns as well. The intensity of Congenital Nystagmus is variable both within and between individuals.CN may intensify when the child concentrates and may disappear when the eyes are dosing.
Since there is a point in space in which the Nystagmus is minimal, usually a head tilt may be seen, or the head may be held to one side in order to receive improved vision at that specific point. The head is positioned in a place in which the direction of gaze is where there is the least nystagmus.
Treatment for Congenital Nystagmus may include prism glasses and, in some cases, surgical correction.
